Reflections on encyclopaedic curation (critical exploration)

With what spirit do we assemble information, objects and ideas? The philosopher Michel Serres makes a distinction between assembling knowledge through the development of systems or that of compilations—such as encyclopaedic. Each involves a different spirit of assembly. Curating is increasingly being applied to fields ranging from health care, computer science and pedagogy. They share a common theme of organisation and classification but differ on the interaction with their material—cautious, calculative, curious, creative and so forth. Encyclopaedic curation brings together a number of different actors from various fields, including an economist, dancer, computer scientist and curator to reflect on the spirit of assembling.

*Discussions on assembly will be on-going throughout the week at the glasshouse in the courtyard of Z33.
