One of the themes of the TRADERS Open School programme focuses on education and how we can re-think education within the arts and design for ‘the other city’. On one hand there is an increasing professionalisation and formalisation of art and design education with a push for instructors to have PhDs and for students to pursue masters and doctoral paths and on the other hand there is a burgeoning movement of Open Schools, informal academies and other platforms for knowledge exchanges that resist formal institutionalization. Jurgen Bey made several challenging and innovative efforts in searching and testing alternative ways of education in art and design, and with his practice he reflects on experiences with education systems and their potentials for liberation and change.
